Modern medicine speaks about circadian rhythms, sleep stages, cognitive restoration and sleep hygiene. The Qur’an begins somewhere more fundamental: it describes sleep itself as one of Allah’s provisions for human beings.
“…and made your sleep for rest, and made the night as a cover, and made the day for livelihood.”
Qur’an 78:9–11, The Clear Quran
These verses are not a neuroscience textbook. But they establish something profound: rest is part of the created human rhythm.
Revelation: sleep has a place
Surah an-Naba places sleep, night and daytime activity alongside other signs of creation. We do not need to claim that the verse predicted melatonin or circadian biology to appreciate it.
Sunnah: preparing to sleep
Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet ﷺ instructed him that when going to bed he should perform wudu as for prayer, lie on his right side, and recite a supplication entrusting himself completely to Allah. The narration is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 247 and again in the Book of Invocations.
The hadith establishes ritual purity, a sleeping position, remembrance and surrender to Allah. It does not say that right-side sleeping cures a particular disease. That distinction protects the Sunnah from claims the Prophet ﷺ did not make.
Science: a different investigation
Modern sleep science asks different questions: how much sleep people need, what happens when sleep is repeatedly restricted, how light influences biological timing, and what contributes to insomnia. Those questions can be studied experimentally. Scientific findings should remain scientific findings rather than being inserted retrospectively into Qur’anic verses or hadith.
The Prophetic bedtime was not merely collapsing into bed after another distracted evening. There was preparation, wudu, remembrance, and an acknowledgement that another day had ended and that one’s affairs ultimately belonged to Allah.
The Sunnah gives the believer something a sleep tracker cannot measure: a way to end the day.
