After being elevated among the ranks of the angels, Azazil’s days were filled with worship, reflection, and guiding the younger jinn. Yet within the harmony of his new status, a subtle discord began to form—a whisper within his soul that questioned his own worth and role.

🌱 The Inner Conflict Begins

One day, as Azazil stood by the Sidrat al-Muntaha, Jibril approached him, noticing his quiet contemplation.

Jibril: “You seem distant, Azazil. What occupies your thoughts?”

Azazil smiled softly. “I wonder… of all creation, what makes one worthy? Is it devotion, victory, or the favor of the Almighty?”

Jibril: “Worthiness is not claimed, it is bestowed. We are but servants, fulfilling the roles assigned to us.”

Azazil nodded, but his eyes lingered on the distant Earth. “I fought to preserve it. I kept order. I served with every breath. Sometimes… I wonder why I was chosen.”

Jibril placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Allah knows what we do not. Your heart was pure, your intention sincere. That is enough.”

🌌 Conversations with Mikail

On another day, Azazil found himself beside Mikail (‘alayhi salam) in the Gardens of Illiyin.

Mikail: “Your devotion is unmatched, Azazil. You remind the jinn to worship, and the younger angels look to you as an example.”

Azazil smiled, but it was a guarded smile. “Perhaps… but what if I am no longer needed? What if something new rises to take my place?”

Mikail: “We do not question the will of Allah. We maintain harmony and serve. That is our duty.”

Azazil bowed his head, but his heart was uneasy. “Yet sometimes, I feel… that I have earned this place. That I have risen to it on my own.”

🌿 The First Root of Pride

Alone, later that evening, Azazil sat in quiet contemplation.

“Have I not proven myself worthy? Am I not the protector, the purifier? I led the great battle. I ascended while others remained. Who could be more deserving?”

These thoughts, though fleeting, left a mark. A seed had been planted—one that would one day grow into a great and terrible pride.

📚 Sources and Inspirations

Note: The dialogues presented in this chapter are fictional reconstructions, inspired by the thematic exploration of Azazil’s pride in classical Islamic texts and Sufi metaphysical interpretations. They are not direct quotes from any hadith or Quranic tafsir but are crafted to reflect the moral and spiritual lessons drawn from the following sources:

  • Ibn Kathir, Al-Bidayah wa’l-Nihayah – Reflects on Azazil’s status and inner conflict.
  • Tafsir al-Tha’labi and Al-Qurtubi – Discusses the characteristics of Azazil before his fall.
  • Sufi writings (Ibn Arabi, Futuhat al-Makkiyyah) – Symbolic reflections on pride and spiritual fall.
  • Surah Al-Kahf (18:50) – Affirmation of Azazil’s origin as a jinn despite his elevated status.
